In the first segment of the chapter of Food – where it comes from, we will learn about the importance of food.
Why is food essential?
Just as a car needs fuel to run or a mobile phone battery needs to be charged, a human being needs fuel to work and to survive. This fuel is obtained in the form of food that we consume.
Human body requires a variety of food
Even though we may have a favourite food, it is not possible to eat the same food every day. That is because the human body is designed to consume a variety of food items. For example, breakfast could be milk and bread, rice for lunch and soup and salad for dinner. That is why one eats different kinds of food every day.
What are the sources of food?
All the above examples indicate that our meals have various ingredients in them and the combination of these ingredients makes the different dishes that we consume.
The ingredients for our food come from two sources: either from plants or animals. Living beings like humans consume food from these two sources. We will learn more about the sources of food for other organisms in the upcoming segments.
