- What’s Next?
In the previous segment, we learnt about Respiratory tract. In this segment, we will learn about Breathing process.
What is Pressure?
- Pressure is defined as the amount of force exerted per unit area.
- It is inversely proportional to Volume. So, when one increases, the other decreases by the same factor.
- The flow of air in and out of the lungs depends on the pressure.
- Air always moves from high pressure to low pressure.
What is the Process of breathing?
- Under the lungs, a sheet of muscles is present which is known as the Diaphragm.
- While inhaling air, diaphragm contracts and lungs expand.
- This increases the volume of the lungs and thus, pressure decreases, due to this the air moves from the atmosphere to the lungs. This is called Inhalation.
- When the diaphragm relaxes, the lungs contract and volume decreases.
- Thus, pressure increases inside the lungs which force the air from the lungs to the atmosphere. This is called Exhalation.
