    • Alveoli
    • Exchange of Gases in Alveoli
    • Summary
    • What’s Next?

In the previous segment, we learnt about Breathing process. In this segment, we will learn about Cellular respiration.

    What are Alveoli?

Alveoli are the tiny air sacs at the end of bronchioles. There are over 300 million alveoli in our lungs.

    Alveoli

They are the site of gaseous exchange.

How are the Gases exchanged in alveoli?

    • Each alveolus is surrounded by a network of capillaries.
    • The blood capillaries carry the red blood cells.
    • The oxygen from the alveolus diffuses into the blood and the carbon dioxide from the blood diffuses into the alveolus and thus gases are exchanged.
    • This process of gaseous exchange is also called Cellular respiration.
