Which different types of hormones are present in our body?

Apart from gonads (testes and ovaries) the other glands present in the human body are:

    • Pituitary Gland – It is called the master endocrine gland. It brings about the necessary changes in the body and secretes many hormones which order other glands.

For example, hormones from Pituitary stimulate the secretions of gonadal hormones while many other hormones like the Growth Hormone are not targeted towards any other gland and directly targets the cells of the body bringing about growth in the individual.

    • Thyroid Gland – It is a butterfly-shaped gland and secretes an important hormone called Thyroxine which regulates metabolism in our body. Improper secretion by the thyroid gland causes the levels of Thyroxine to either increase or decrease in the body which causes several problems.

For example, the swelling or bulging of the thyroid gland. This condition is commonly called Simple Goitre.

    • Pancreas – Although sugar is required by all the cells in our body, it is necessary to only a limited extent. If the supply exceeds the demand, then the cells may get damaged. Thus, in order to control the glucose level in our blood, we require a hormone called Insulin which is secreted by Pancreas. This hormone is responsible for regulating the sugar levels in our body.

Disorder of Insulin or the Pancreas will lead to Diabetes.

    • Adrenal Glands – The pair of pyramid-shaped glands placed above the kidneys are called Adrenal glands. They secrete the hormone called Adrenaline which controls the Fight and Flight Reaction of our body.
