    Genetics

    There Are Two Types of Variation

    There are two types of variation: natural and artificial.

    Natural variation is the variation that occurs naturally in a species. It is the result of the genetic variation that exists in the population. This variation can be used to adapt to changing environments or to produce new species.

    Artificial variation is the variation that is created by humans. It is the result of selective breeding or genetic engineering. This variation can be used to improve the characteristics of a species or to create new species.

    Mendel’s Laws of Heredity

    Mendel’s first law is the law of segregation. This law states that the alleles for a particular trait are randomly separated during the formation of gametes. This law is also known as the law of purity of gametes. Mendel’s second law is the law of independent assortment. This law states that the alleles for different traits are randomly assorted during the formation of gametes.

    Notations used in Breeding Experiments

    There are a few notations that are typically used in breeding experiments. The most common is a cross symbol, which is used to indicate that two different strains of organisms have been crossed. For example, a cross symbol between two different strains of bacteria would mean that the bacteria were crossed in a lab. Another common notation is a plus sign, which is used to indicate that a trait has been successfully passed from one generation to the next. For example, a plus sign next to a particular gene would mean that the gene had been successfully passed from one generation to the next.

    Law of Segregation

    The law of segregation states that alleles of a gene are segregated equally into gametes.
