What is the Meaning of Wilt?
Wilting is a physical response that occurs in plants when they are deprived of water. The leaves of the plant droop and the plant loses its ability to produce chlorophyll. Wilting can be a sign that a plant is not getting enough water, or that it is experiencing a high level of stress.
Types of wilts
There are many types of wilts, but the most common ones are bacterial wilts and viral wilts. Bacterial wilts are caused by bacteria, and viral wilts are caused by viruses. There are also fungal wilts, which are caused by fungi, but these are not as common as bacterial and viral wilts.
Bacterial wilts are caused by bacteria such as Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria (formerly known as Pseudomonas vesicatoria), which is the bacteria that causes tomato bacterial wilt. This bacteria is spread by insects, such as aphids, and it enters the plant through the wounds that they cause. Once the bacteria is in the plant, it spreads throughout the plant, causing the leaves to wilt and the plant to die.
Viral wilts are caused by viruses such as the tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), which is the virus that causes tomato spotted wilt. This virus is spread by insects, such as thrips, and it enters the plant through the wounds that they cause. Once the virus is in the plant, it spreads throughout the plant, causing the leaves to wilt and the plant to die.
