What could be better than an IIT or NIT when it comes to engineering? The significance of the two institutions in the life of an engineering aspirant is supreme. Indian Institute of Technology and National Institute of Technology are the backbone of the development that has happened in the field of science and technology research in the country. Both the institutes are well known for their exceptional education standards. Though the two names are synonymously consumed when we talk about the scientific research domains, there are some distinctions to be elucidated. What is IIT?

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is an autonomous public institute set up for higher education, working under the Ministry of education, governed and maintained by the government of India. IITs come under the Institute of Technology act 1961, by which they are considered as an institute of national importance. IIT Kharagpur was the first established IIT of the nation in the year 1950. Four other campuses in Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, and Delhi followed the trend in 1960. After the Institute of Technology, an act was passed in 1961, and it became mandatory for the states to follow and inaugurate one IIT in every state. IIT Guwahati was established in 1994, IIT Roorkee in 2001, five colleges were converted into IIT in 2003, eight new IITs were inaugurated in 2008, and six more in 2015, which makes a total of 23 IITs, a powerful foundation now leading the way for growth and expansion in the field of science & mathematics education.

    What is NIT?

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) is an autonomous public institute for higher education governed and maintained by the Ministry of Education, the government of India. NITs come under the National Institute of Technology act, 2007, which acknowledged them as an institute of national importance. Once called the Regional Engineering College (REC), it has now been converted to NITs after the implementation of the second five-year plan (1956-1960). There are a total of 31 NITs in the country. 17 RECs were established in 1959 in the major states, which are now called NITs, the oldest being NIT Patna, the first regional engineering college in the country. In 1967 six more NIT campuses were added, and from 1985 to 1986, two more campuses were inaugurated. 2002 marked the mutation of all RECs to NITs.

    Admission Procedure

Admission to the premier institutes is possible only after an excelled performance in the Joint entrance examination Mains and advanced (JEE Mains & JEE Advanced). The qualifying students of JEE Mains are eligible for admissions to NITs. Also, only after qualifying JEE Mains, the aspirants could appear for JEE Advanced, which is the only gateway to IITs.

    Courses offered

When it comes to the curriculum, IITs have comprehended them well in particular as they provide wholesome knowledge along with other subjects apart from science, essentially the practical parameters of the development in their respective subject domains. Professors have an innovative style of teaching. NITs also have the course structure circulating near IITs, with an extensive style of teaching. The professors are at par with those of IITs, with a dynamic shift in terms of teaching experience. From the codes of computer science engineering to the virus variants of biological engineering, IITs and NITs have not left any possible dimension that is there to explore in the realm of science and mathematics.

    Facilities and Infrastructure

The infrastructure of IITs is comprehensive and outfitted in every aspect, with well-functioned labs and excellent classroom facilities. NITs are still in the development phase. Though the labs and classrooms have all the facilities, the best still exists in the IITs.

    Cultural Fests and Sports

Apart from the cutthroat competition in and out of the campuses, cultural fests and sports are held in both the IITs and the NITs. They boost various sports and cultural activities, allowing students to explore beyond academics. From debates to drama to athletics, fests and sports are a mega-deal to enlighten the spirits when no formula or theory seems to work. Inter-college contests are held, allowing students to participate in as many activities as they wish to.

    Placement and Packages

The deciding standard for the choice a student makes when it comes to admission. It is a general trend the institute that offers higher placement packages attracts most of the students. But the truth that needs to be addressed is that the placement depends on how well the students have made use of the opportunities they receive.

IITs see a surge of multinational companies offering skyrocketing packages to the students, and so the record of highest packages remains with IITs, but NITs are not far behind. NITs are also observing the tech giants surging in search of brilliant minds that could help them grow and expand the horizons of technology. The average package varies from campus to campus. There are students who, despite studying in an IIT, manage a package of 4 lakhs per annum, whereas several students studying in NIT bag handsome placement packages. It all depends on the subject expertise and abilities the student develops.

    Entrepreneur and Alumni

Both the institutes have delivered the founders of the leading firms across the globe, the majority being from IITs. According to an analysis done in the US, it was confirmed that the major front founders of the topmost American startups are IITians. NITs are also in the race of producing business tycoons. As the nation is experiencing a startup boost, institutes are catching up to foster an ecosystem of all-around professions.

Alumni of IITs dominate the leading overseas settlements.

Comparing all the facets of IIT and NIT, the conspicuous edge that IITs possess over NITs is what makes them the first choice of any engineering aspirant. Both the institutes foster a culture of a holistic approach for not just academics but also to forge a proficient personality of the students, making them stand out from the crowd. In the end, what matters is how you utilize the resources at hand.
