To help widen the scope of education with advanced technology methods, the Government of India introduced the National Education Policy 2020 in July 2020.

    What is National Education Policy 2020?

    The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a new initiative by the Indian government to improve the quality of education in the country.     Some interesting facts about National Education Policy 2020

    National Education Policy 2020 is a policy of the Government of India announced by the Minister of Human Resource Development on 29 July 2020. It replaces the National Education Policy 1986. It aims to universalize education from pre-primary to secondary level and make it more inclusive and equitable. The policy also aims to increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education to 50% by 2035.

    The policy aims to provide quality and holistic education to all children in the age group of 3-18 years. The policy also envisages setting up a National Higher Education Regulatory Authority (NHERA) to regulate all higher education institutions.

    THE 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 MODEL

    The 5+3+3+4 model is a new structure proposed in the NEP 2020 policy that will replace the old 10+2 structure.

    5 Foundation Stage Ages 3 to 8 Pre-primary followed by Classes 1 and 2
    3 Preparatory Stage Ages 8 to 11 Classes 3 to 5
    3 Middle Stage Ages 11 to 14 Classes 6 to 8
    4 Secondary Stage Ages 14 to 18 Classes 9 to 12

    Key Recommendations of National Education Policy 2020

    1. The policy recommends setting up a National Education Commission to review the education system and make necessary reforms.
    2. The policy recommends the introduction of a new National Curriculum Framework to make the education system more relevant to the needs of the 21st century.
    3. The policy recommends setting up a National Accreditation Authority to improve the quality of education.
    4. The policy recommends the setting up National Institutes of Educational Planning and Administration and the National Institutes of Open Schooling.
    5. The policy also recommends setting up a National Testing Agency to conduct entrance examinations for higher education.

    What to expect post-NEP?

    This is what you can expect in the post-NEP era. It will no longer be a one-way lecture delivered by the teachers where students are forced to sit silently throughout. Students will no longer have little/any scope to pose their questions and doubts. It will not be a conventional, passive one-way mode of teaching. Instead, it will be an interactive, participating, engaging, fun-filled and dialogic mode of learning where learners will have full freedom to express any of their doubts or questions.
