Introduction of Acetone

Acetone Introduction- is a colorless, volatile, flammable liquid ketone that is the simplest ketone compound. It is a weak organic base that is used as a solvent in paints, lacquers, and varnishes. It is also used as a cleaning agent and as a degreaser in the manufacture of printing ink, plastics, and synthetic rubber. Acetone is produced commercially by the oxidation of propene.

History of Acetone

• Acetone is a colorless, volatile, and flammable liquid ketone. It is the simplest ketone and has the formula CH3COCH3. Pure acetone is a by-product of the manufacture of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and is also obtained by the distillation of wood.
• Acetone was first isolated in 1785 by the French chemist Jean-Antoine Chaptal. He obtained it by the distillation of wood. Acetone was first used as an industrial solvent in the early 1900s. It is now used mainly in the production of plastics, synthetic fibers, and paints.

Production of Acetone

• In the production of acetone, the main raw material is propylene. Propylene is converted into acetone and other products in a process called the cumene process.
• The cumene process starts with propylene and benzene. Propylene and benzene are reacted in the presence of a catalyst to form cumene. Cumene is then converted into acetone and other products in a process called hydro cracking.
