    • What’s Next?

In the previous segment, we learnt about Vegetative propagation. In this segment, we will learn about Grafting in detail.

    What is Grafting?

    • Grafting is the method of vegetative propagation in which two plants are involved. One plant is a mature plant with roots and another is a cutting from the desired plant.
    • The matured plant is called Stock and the cutting is called a Scion.

What are the Different ways of grafting?

There are two main methods of grafting: scion grafting and bud grafting.

    1. What is Scion grafting?
      • Scion grafting is a method of grafting in which two plants are involved.
      • One is the stock which is usually resistant to pests and diseases. The stock is the main source of nutrition as it has a root system.
      • The other part is called the scion which is a stem from the desired plant.
      • There are two subtypes of scion grafting: whip (tongue) grafting and wedge grafting.
        • What is Whip (Tongue) grafting?
          • In this process, both stock and scion are of the same diameter.
          • The cuts on the top part of the stock and base part of the scion are made in such a way that they fit properly.
          • Then they are tightly tied together with a piece of cloth. After a few days, the two parts will grow as a single plant.
