- What’s Next?
In the previous segment, we learnt about Vegetative propagation. In this segment, we will learn about Grafting in detail.
What is Grafting?
- Grafting is the method of vegetative propagation in which two plants are involved. One plant is a mature plant with roots and another is a cutting from the desired plant.
- The matured plant is called Stock and the cutting is called a Scion.
What are the Different ways of grafting?
There are two main methods of grafting: scion grafting and bud grafting.
- What is Scion grafting?
- Scion grafting is a method of grafting in which two plants are involved.
- One is the stock which is usually resistant to pests and diseases. The stock is the main source of nutrition as it has a root system.
- The other part is called the scion which is a stem from the desired plant.
- There are two subtypes of scion grafting: whip (tongue) grafting and wedge grafting.
- What is Whip (Tongue) grafting?
- In this process, both stock and scion are of the same diameter.
- The cuts on the top part of the stock and base part of the scion are made in such a way that they fit properly.
- Then they are tightly tied together with a piece of cloth. After a few days, the two parts will grow as a single plant.
