What is Layering?
Layering is a type of vegetative propagation in which the stem of the plant is enabled to grow roots while still attached to the plant.
What are the Different types of layering?
There are two different types of layering: mound layering and air layering.
Mound layering
-
- In mound layering, the lowest branch of the plant is bent and a part of it is buried in the soil. The branch remains connected to the plant.
- The part buried in the soil begins to grow adventitious roots and gets its own nutrition from the soil.
- After a few days, this part is cut from the main plant and grows as an independent plant.

Air layering
-
- In air layering, an incision is made in a part of the branch and inner tissues are exposed.
- The exposed part is covered with moss and tied with a polythene bag. An earthen pot is tied on the branch above for continuous water supply.
