    • What’s Next?

In the previous segment, we learnt about the Nomenclature of hydrocarbons. In this segment, we will learn about the Structure of hydrocarbons.

How to create the Structure of hydrocarbons?

Two important things must be known to create the structure of hydrocarbons: the number of carbon atoms and the family of hydrocarbons.

    For example,

    • Methane → 1 carbon atom and alkane family

Step 1: Take a single carbon atom and make four lines around it, as the valency of carbon is four.

    Step 1

Step 2: Place one hydrogen atom at the end of each line.

    Step 2

This is the structural formula for methane.

    • Ethene → 2 carbon atoms and alkene family
