CBSE Class 9 English Poem – The Voice of the Rain Summary

Walt Whitman talks about a conversation he once had with the rain in this poem. It happened as raindrops fell gently from the heavens. “Who are you?” the poet inquires of the rain. Strangely, the rain responds, “I am the earth’s poem.” Further, the rain claims to have been born in the form of intangible and invisible vapours. This vapour rises eternally from deepwater bodies and the land of the earth. It reaches heaven (the sky) and transforms into clouds with the ability to change shape. Nevertheless, it remains the same at its core.

It then returns to earth as tiny droplets that wash away the dust and repair the drought-stricken, barren land. New plants come to life due to this, which would otherwise stay lifeless and unborn inside the ground as mere seeds. As a result of this perpetual cyclic lifestyle, the rain returns to its source. It pours life into the earth, making it pure and beautiful.

After hearing the story of the rain, the poet realizes that life is similar to a song. And the poet’s heart is where the music was born. When the song finishes, it wanders (pass on) from one place to the next. It may change or remain the same as it goes, but it will eventually return to the poet with all of the listeners’ love.

On the other hand, the poetry is written from the perspective of someone who questions the rain, “Who was it?” And the rains respond, “I am the song of the Earth.” It continues to do so and then returns to the land to wash and nurture it as it did before. And yet, if it weren’t for the rain, the seeds would just be seeds, and we wouldn’t have any flowers.

The poetry then turns into a song. The song tells the story of rain – its birthplace, unchecked wandering, and eventually returning to its origin. It means that songs originate from the soul once they’ve been heard and thought about, and they return with love, whether good or terrible. When the rain falls and rises, so does the poem. Besides, the rain is like a song from the poet’s heart, where it was born. It spreads all across the world and returns to the poet in the form of praise. However, whether it is ruined or not, it returns with a lot of love for its birthplace.

The Voice of the Rain Summary Class 11 – Brief Explanation

The poem The Voice of The Rain celebrates rain and the cyclic movement that sustains all living creatures on the earth. In this poem, the poet recalls his conversation with the rain. “And who art thou?” he asks the rain, to which the rain responds that it is the earth’s poet. The rain then explains that it originates in the earth’s water bodies and floats upward as intangible vapours. It then rises to the heavens in the form of dense clouds. Its core, however, remains the same as it returns to the place where it was born. It returns to Mother Earth as rain, washing away all the filth and bringing life to the drought-stricken lands.

The poet connects rain to music in the Voice of the Rain. He says that there is a strong relationship between the two. A song written by a human is a reflection of that person’s soul. It is born in the heart. After going from one person to the next, it returns to the one with the listeners’ unconditional love. Rain emerges from the soil and condenses into vapour in the sky. The clouds then burst, resulting in the rain that returns to its origin.

    FAQ’s

    1. There’s a connection between rain and music. Which terms are used to express this? Describe the resemblance between the two.

Ans: The phrases ‘For the song, issuing from its birthplace, after fulfillment, wandering Reck’d or unreck’d, duly with love returns’ establish a connection between rain and music. The poet contrasts the rain’s and song’s life – cycle here. The song, which began in the singer’s heart and wandered the world, whether loved or not, eventually returned to its birthplace with a lot of love. Similarly, rain that comes from the earth (birthplace) does its job of cleansing and purifying the earth, then wanders and returns with love for its creator.

    1. Why are the last two lines put within brackets?

Ans: The last two lines are included in brackets because they represent the poet’s observations and thoughts. He is drawing a similarity between the rain and music.
