In the previous segment, we learnt a few parameters to sort materials around us like nature, solubility, ability to sink or float. In this segment of the chapter, ‘Sorting materials into groups’ let us look at the last parameter to sort materials into groups – the ability of an object to pass light.

How to classify materials based on the ability to pass light?

Based on the ability to pass light, we can classify materials into three types:

    1. Opaque materials: These materials do not allow light to pass through them. As a result, nothing can be seen through opaque objects.
    2. Translucent materials: These materials allow light to pass through it but not that well. Only some amount of light passes through such objects. Hence, a clear image of objects is not formed on the other side of translucent materials.
    3. Transparent materials: These materials allow light to pass through it and hence we can see everything across them clearly.

    Summary

Classification based on the ability to pass light

    • Opaque materials: Do not allow light to pass through.
    • Translucent materials: Allow some part of light to pass through.
    • Transparent materials: Allow light to pass through.

    What’s next?

In our next segment of Class 06 Science, we will study the chapter separation of substances.
