    How to represent decimals on a number line?

    We know how to represent integers on a number line. And between 2 consecutive integers lie infinite numbers. And these are decimal numbers that can also be represented on a number line.

    Let us understand how.

    Consider the decimal number 1.6 It can be written as 1 + 0.6

    This means that 1.6 will be ahead of 1 by 0.6 on the number line. That is, it will lie somewhere between 1 and 2.

    Now, 0.6 is nothing but 6

    . That means it represents 6 out of 10 equal parts.

    So to represent 1.6 on the number line, we divide the distance between 1 and 2 into 10 equal parts. And the sixth mark from 1, is 1.6, as shown below:
