Example of addition of decimal fractions
Q. There are 3 bags. The first bag weighs 24 kilos and 200 grams. The second one weighs 7 kilos and 59 grams. The third one weighs 2 kilos and 3 grams. Find the total weight of all three bags.
Solution:
1000 grams = 1 kg.
So, the weight of each of the 3 bags in kilograms is as below:
Bag 1 | Bag 2 | Bag 3 | |
Weight in kg and gms | 24 kgs and 200 gms | 7 kgs and 59 gms | 2 kgs and 3 gms |
Converting gms to kgs | 200 gms = 200 kg 1000 = 0.200 kg | 59 gms = 50 kg 1000 = 0.059 kg | 3 gms = 3 kg 1000 = 0.003 kg |
Weight in kg | 24.200 kg | 7.059 kg | 2.003 kg |
To find the total weight of the bags, 24.200 kg, 7.059 kg, and 2.003 kg must be added.
