    How to subtract decimal fractions?

    To subtract decimal fractions, first convert the given decimal fractions to like decimal fractions.

    Then arrange them vertically so that place values of the digits in the decimal places of both decimal numbers match. That is tenths with tenths, hundredths with hundredths, thousandths with thousandths and so on.

    Then, the decimal fractions can be subtracted. For example,

    (i) Subtract 3.5601 from 12.2.

    Solution:

    First, make the decimal fractions like. That is, 3.5601 and 12.2000.

    The decimal fractions are arranged vertically as shown below:

    1 2 . 2 0 0 0

    – 3 . 5 6 0 1

    Now the subtraction can be carried out as follows:
