In the previous segment of Class 6 Maths, we discussed the Simplest form of fractions. In this segment, we will learn how to compare like fractions.

    What are Like fractions?

If the denominators of all the fractions in a group of fractions are the same, then they are known as Like fractions.

    For example,

    5 , 23 , 12 is a group of like fractions. 21 , 3 , 6 is another group of like fractions.

    12 12 12 7 7 7

    How to compare like fractions?

To compare two like fractions, compare their numerators. The fraction with the largest numerator is greater than the fraction with the smallest numerator.

    For example,

    1. Consider 7 and 13.

    9 9

The two fractions 7 and 13 have the same denominator 9. Hence, they are like fractions.

    9 9

To compare these two fractions, we will first compare their numerators.

    Since 7 < 13, we can say 7 < 13.

    9 9

    1. Consider 31 ??? 11.

    21 21

The two fractions 31 and 11 have the same denominator 9. Hence, they are like fractions.

    21 21

To compare these two fractions, we will first compare their numerators.

    Since 31 > 11, we can say 31 > 11.

    21 21
