- What’s Next?
In the previous segment, we revised the concepts of Natural numbers and Whole numbers. In this segment, we will be introduced to Integers.
What are Integers?
- Integers are whole numbers including negative numbers of these whole numbers.
- The set of integers are represented by the letter ‘Z’.
- This set includes positive integers, negative integers, and zero.
Positive integers
The numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and so on are called positive integers. All natural numbers are positive integers.
Negative integers
The numbers −1, −2, −3, and so on are called negative integers.
- Negative numbers are used to express certain values. For example, temperatures below zero.
- Negative numbers are also used to indicate loss of money.
Say, if you gave a friend ₹ 100 and he returned only ₹ 50. Then, the net amount you would have is ₹ (- 50), which means you suffered a loss.
- Zero is neither a positive integer nor a negative integer.

The sum, difference and product of an integer is always an integer.
What’s next?
In the next segment of Class 6 Maths, we will learn how integers are represented on a number line.
