Order of integers on a number line
- On the number line, as we move towards the right, the values of the numbers increase. And as we move to the left, the values of the numbers decrease.
Value increases
Value decreases
Value on integers on the number line
- This increase and decrease in values tell two things about the order in which the integers are placed on the number line:
- From any point on the number line, as we move towards the right, the numbers are in ascending order.
- From any point on the number line, as we move to the left from any given point the numbers are in descending order.
- Thus, for any two integers on the number line, the integer to the right will always be greater than the integer to its left.
For example,
(i) 4 and 7
7 is greater than 4. Symbolically, it is represented as 7 > 4.
Also, 7 lies to the right of 4.
