In our previous segment, we learnt about the place value of digits in a number. In this segment, we will learn about the use of commas according to the Indian System of Numeration and the International System of Numeration.

Why are commas used in the number system?

Generally, commas are used while writing large numbers. It is because by using commas at regular intervals, we can easily find out the place value of digits. This makes the numbers easier to read and write in words.

How to put commas in numbers?

We will see two different ways in which commas are inserted in numbers:

    Indian system of numeration

In this system, we use the place values as ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, lakhs, ten lakhs, crores, ten crores etc.

      • 1,000 (Thousand) = Three zeros
      • 1,00,000 (Lakh) = Five zeros
      • 1,00,00,000 (Crore) = Seven zeros

    For example :

42349816 is a large number. But the same number can also be written as 4,23,49,816.

By using commas, the number becomes easier to read and can be easily expressed in words as four crores, twenty-three lakhs, forty-nine thousand, eight hundred and sixteen.

Here, we use the following method of placing commas-

      • While inserting commas, we go from right to left (←).
