## Divisibility by 11

A number is divisible by 11 if the sum of the digits in the odd-numbered places, starting from the units place, minus the sum of the digits in the even-numbered places, is divisible by 11.

For example,

## (i) 168179

Step 1: Find the sum of digits in odd places, starting from the units place.

The digits in the odd places are underlined: 168179 Their sum is, 9 + 1 + 6 = 16.

Step 2: Find the sum of digits in the even-numbered places.

The digits in the even places are underlined: 168179

Their sum is, 7 + 8 + 1 = 16.

Step 3: Find the difference between the results of step 1 and step 2.

The difference between the two sums is 16 – 16 = 0.

Since 0 is divisible by 11, the given number 168179 is also divisible by 11.

Step 1: Find the sum of digits in odd places, starting from the units place.
