    • Addition of Whole Numbers using more than One Property
    • Summary
    • What’s Next?

In the previous segment, we learnt how to use the associative and commutative property to add whole numbers. In this segment, we will do the same for multiplication of whole numbers.

Using associative and commutative property for multiplication of whole numbers

    Example 1: ?? × ???? × ?

We know that 25 times 4 is 100. And when we multiply any number with a hundred, we

only add two zeros at the end. So we need to multiply 25 and 4 first.

And for that, we need to swap the positions of second and third numbers. So this is how this problem can be solved:

    25 × 8358 × 4 = 25 × (8358 × 4) … Associative property

    = 25 × (4 × 8358) … Commutative property

    = (25 × 4) × 8358 … Associative property

    = 100 × 8358

    = 835800

    Example 2: ??? × ?? × ? × ??

This problem can be solved by using just the associative property as below:

    125 × 40 × 8 × 25 = (125 × 40) × (8 × 25)

    = 5000 × 200

    = 1000000

But let us see how we can use the associative and commutative property to solve it.

    125 × 40 × 8 × 25 = 125 × (40 × 8) × 25 … Associative property

    What’s next?

    = 125 × (8 × 40) × 25 … Commutative property

    = (125 × 8) × (40 × 25) … Associative property

    = 1000 × 1000

    = 1000000

In the next segment of Class 6 Maths, we will look at the Distributive property of whole numbers.
