    • Adding Polynomials Column Method – Example
    • What’s Next?

In the previous segment, we used the column method to add two polynomials. In this segment, we will solve an example using the same method.

    Addition of polynomials – Example

    Q. Add (?????? + ???? + ??? − ?????)???(? + ???? + ??? + ??)using the column method.

    Solution:

In the column method, write the expressions, such that the like terms are arranged in the same column.

    15??2?

    +14xz

    +3xy

    -10?2?

    ??2?

    +xy

    + ??2

    +3

In the above arrangement, there is no term under 14xz as there is no term in the second expression with the same variables. Also, 10?2? ??? ??2 have the same variables with the same exponents. Hence they are like terms.

    Now adding the like terms,

    15??2?

    +14xz

    +3xy

    −10?2?

    ??2?

    +xy

    +??2

    +3

    16??2?

    +14xz

    +4xy

    −9??2

    +3

    Thus, (15??2? + 14?? + 3?? − 10?2?) + (3 + ??2? + ??2 + ??) = 16??2? − 9??2 + 4?? + 14?? + 3

    What’s next?

In the next segment of Class 7 Maths, we will use the column method for subtraction of polynomials.
