In the previous segment, we had looked at a few examples of ratios. In this segment of the
chapter ‘Comparing Quantities’, we will see how to compare ratios.
How can we Compare Ratios?
Consider two ratios: 5 : 7 and 7 : 9. Let us understand how to compare ratios, using the following steps:
Step 1: Express the ratios as fractions.
Ratios | Fractions |
5 : 7 | 5 7 |
7 : 9 | 7 9 |
Step 2: Make the denominators of the fractions the same.
To compare two fractions, make their denominators the same. Find the LCM (least common multiples) of both the numbers in the denominator.
Since 7 and 9 have no common factors, their LCM can directly be written as the product of 7 and 9. Thus, LCM = 63.
Fraction 1 | Fraction 2 |
5 × 9 45 = 7 × 9 63 | 7 × 7 49 = 9 × 7 63 |
