Comparing Ratios – Example
Q. Emma scored 80 marks out of 100 in a subject and her friend Frieda scored 40 marks out of 50 in a subject. Who performed better of the two?
Solution:
The ratio of marks scored by Emma to total marks = 80 : 100 = 80
100
The ratio of marks scored by Freida to total marks = 40 : 50 = 40
50
Reducing the fractions to their lowest forms,
Fraction 1 | Fraction 2 |
80 ÷ 20 4 = 100 ÷ 20 5 | 40 ÷ 10 4 = 50 ÷ 10 5 |
Since, 4 = 4,
5 5
both the ratios 80 : 100 and 40 : 50 are equal.
By comparing both the ratios, we can conclude that Emma has done as well as Frieda.
