In the previous segment, we had a look at the comparison of ratios. In this segment of the
chapter ‘Comparing Quantities’, we will look at a few examples of ratio.
Problem 1
Two numbers are in the ratio 3 : 7. If their sum is 710, find the numbers. Solution:
The two numbers are in the ratio 3 : 7.
Let ‘x’ be the common multiple. So, the two numbers are 3x and 7x.
According to the given condition, the sum of the two numbers is 710.
∴ 3x + 7x = 710
∴ 10x = 710
∴ x = 710
10
∴ x = 71
Hence,
the first number is 3x = 3 x 71 = 211 the second number is 7x = 7 x 71 = 497
Problem 2
₹80 are to be divided between Anil and Mohan in ratio 5 : 11. How much money does each get?
Solution:
₹ 80 are to be divided between Anil and Mohan in ratio 5 : 11.
Let the common multiple be ‘x’. So, Anil will get ₹ 5x and Mohan will get ₹ 11x.
