chapter ‘Comparing Quantities’, we will look at a few examples of ratio.

    Problem 1

Two numbers are in the ratio 3 : 7. If their sum is 710, find the numbers. Solution:

The two numbers are in the ratio 3 : 7.

Let ‘x’ be the common multiple. So, the two numbers are 3x and 7x.

According to the given condition, the sum of the two numbers is 710.

    ∴ 3x + 7x = 710

    ∴ 10x = 710

    ∴ x = 710

    10

    ∴ x = 71

    Hence,

    the first number is 3x = 3 x 71 = 211 the second number is 7x = 7 x 71 = 497
