    • What’s Next?

In the previous segment, we learnt about the Power of product and Power of quotient property. In this segment, we will understand the concept of Place Value in decimals.

    What are Decimals?

Decimals are another way of representing fractions and are therefore called Decimal Fractions.

For example, the fraction 462351 can be written as 462.351.

    1000

There are two parts to a decimal number:

    • An integral part, that is the number before the decimal point.
    • A decimal part, that is the number after the decimal point.

In the case of 462.351, 462 is the integral part of the number and 351 is the decimal part of the number.

What is Place value of decimal fractions?

Place value is the value of each digit of a number, based on its position.

In the case of decimal fractions,

    • Place value of digits in the integral part increases by ten times the previous place value as we move towards the left.
    • Place value of digits in the decimal part reduces to one-tenth of the previous place value, as we move towards the right.
