    Suppose if we say Haritha ate 3 1 pancakes instead of 7 pancakes, it is easier to understand.

    3 1 means 3 + 1. So, 3 1 pancakes mean 3 pancakes and half of another pancake. Thus, mixed

    fractions provide a better idea about the value of a number.

    For example,

    10 3 represents a number whose value is a little more than 10.

    Did you know?

    The first noted evidence of the use of fractions dates back to 2000 BC in Egypt, where fractions were used to calculate taxes. The land belonging to an individual was divided into sections, and each section was taxed a certain amount.

    The same idea was adopted by the British in 1550 AD for profits of a voyage that had to be paid.
