Let us understand how to represent a mixed fraction as an improper fraction by the following steps, using 5 2 as an example:

    3

Step 1: Identify the whole part and the fractional part of the mixed fraction.

    In 5

    2

, the whole part is 5and the fractional part is 2 3 3

Step 2: Multiply the whole part with the denominator of the fractional part. So, 5 × 3 = 15.

Step 3: Add the result obtained in step 2 with the numerator of the fractional part. Thus, 15 + 2 = 17.

The result obtained in step 3 will be the numerator of the required improper fraction, that is 17. The denominator of the improper fraction will be the same as the denominator of the fractional

part of the mixed fraction, that is 3. So, the required improper fraction is 17.

    3

Thus, we can write the mixed fraction 5 2 as the improper fraction, 17.
