In this segment, we will learn how to form equations.

    How to form an equation?

Let us understand how to form an equation for a word problem with the help of the following example:

John is 180 cm tall. The length of his lower body is 100 cm. What is the length of his upper body? Let us form an equation for this word problem using the following steps:

Problem visualised Step 1: Assign a variable.

Assign the variable to depict the unknown. Here, the length of John’s upper body is the unknown quantity. The variable that is mostly used in solving such equations is x. So let us assign the length of John’s upper body as x cms.

Let the length of John’s upper body = x cms

    Step 2: Form the equation.
