    Problem 1

    In a parallelogram ABCD, AX and CY are the altitudes on CD and AD respectively. If AD = 6 cm, CD = 12 cm, and CY = 10 cm. Find AX.

    Solution:

    AD = 6 cm CY = 10 cm CD = 12 cm

    Considering AD as the base and CY as the corresponding height, Area of parallelogram ABCD = Base x Height = AD x CY

    = 10 x 6

    = 60 ??2.… (i)

    Considering CD as the base and AX as the corresponding height, Area of parallelogram ABCD = Base x Height = CD x AX

    = 12 x AX … (ii)

    From (i) and (ii), 12 x AX = 60

    So, ?? = 60

    Hence, AX = 5 cm
