    Example 1

    Q. Find the area of △PQR with sides 25, 39, and 56 units.

    Fig 1

    Solution:

    Let a = 25 units, b = 39 units, c = 56 units.

    Semi-perimeter (?) = ?+?+?

    2

    25+39+56 120

    ∴ ? = =

    = 60 units.

    2 2

    By Heron’s formula,

    A (△ABC) = √?(? − ?)(? − ?)(? − ?)

    ∴ A (△ABC) =√60(60 − 25)(60 − 39)(60 − 56) = √60 × 35 × 21 × 4

    ∴ A (△ABC) = √2 × 2 × 3 × 5 × 5 × 7 × 3 × 7 × 2 × 2

    ∴ A (△ABC) = √(2 × 2) × (2 × 2) × (3 × 3) × (5 × 5) × (7 × 7)

    ∴ A (△ABC) = 2 × 2 × 3 × 5 × 7 = 420 sq. units.
