What is Probability?
Probability is a mathematical tool used to calculate the likelihood of an event occurring. Probability is calculated by dividing the number of ways the event can happen by the total number of possible outcomes.
Types of Probability
There are three types of probability:
1. Experimental Probability
This is the probability of an event occurring, based on actual experiments. For example, if you toss a coin, the experimental probability of getting heads is 1/2, because that is the ratio of the number of times heads occurs (in a large number of tosses) to the number of times tails occurs.
2. Theoretical Probability
This is the probability of an event occurring, based on the assumption that all outcomes are equally likely. For example, if you toss a coin, the theoretical probability of getting heads is 1/2, because that is the ratio of the number of times heads occurs (in a large number of tosses) to the total number of possible outcomes (two).
3. Subjective Probability
This is the probability of an event occurring, based on the opinion of the person making the estimate. For example, if you toss a coin, the subjective probability of getting heads is 1/2, because that is the ratio of the number of times heads occurs (in a large number of tosses) to the number of people who would guess that heads will occur.
Formula of Probability
The probability of an event is a number between 0 and 1 that represents the likelihood that the event will occur. The probability of an event can be calculated using the following formula:
Probability = (Number of favorable outcomes) / (Number of total outcomes)
Example of a Probability Question
A jar contains 10 red balls and 20 blue balls. If one ball is drawn at random, what is the probability that it is red?
3/10
