    Platonic Solids

    • Plato, in his dialogue Timaeus, discusses the nature of the physical world and the role of the gods. In doing so, he introduces the concept of the five regular solids, which he believes are the fundamental shapes of the material world.
    • Each of the five regular solids is built from a single type of polygonal face. There are only five such shapes, because each face can be constructed using only three straight lines. The five shapes are the tetrahedron, the octahedron, the icosahedron, the dodecahedron, and the cube.
    • The tetrahedron is made up of four equilateral triangles, the octahedron is made up of eight equilateral squares, the icosahedron is made up of twenty equilateral triangles, the dodecahedron is made up of twelve pentagons, and the cube is made up of six squares.
    • The Platonic solids are said to be regular because the angles between corresponding faces are all the same. Furthermore, the faces are all congruent and the solids are all symmetrical about their axes of symmetry.

    Tetrahedron Characteristics

    A tetrahedron is a four-sided figure with triangular sides. All of the angles in a tetrahedron are 60 degrees.

    Right and Oblique Tetrahedrons

    There are six different right tetrahedrons, and six different oblique tetrahedrons.

    • Regular tetrahedra have all four faces congruent, and all four edges of the same length. Right tetrahedra have four faces that are all right angles, and all four edges are the same length. Oblique tetrahedra have four faces that are not all right angles, and the edges are not all the same length.
    • There are six different right tetrahedrons. They are the tetrahedron, the square pyramid, the octahedron, the cube, the dodecahedron, and the icosahedron.
    • There are six different oblique tetrahedrons. They are the triangular pyramid, the hexahedron, the decahedron, the heptahedron, the tetrakaidecahedron, and the pentakaidecahedron.

    Regular and Irregular Tetrahedrons

    Regular tetrahedrons are those that have all four sides of the same length and all four angles of the same size. Irregular tetrahedrons are those that do not have all four sides of the same length or all four angles of the same size.

    Regular Tetrahedron Formulas

    There are six possible combinations of tetrahedron formulas, which are listed below.

    • The tetrahedron has four faces, each made up of three points.
    • The tetrahedron has six faces, each made up of four points.
    • The tetrahedron has eight faces, each made up of five points.
    • The tetrahedron has twelve faces, each made up of six points.
    • The tetrahedron has twenty faces, each made up of seven points.
    • The tetrahedron has thirty-two faces, each made up of eight points.

    Make Your Own Tetrahedron

    This is a great project to do with kids.

    You will need:

    • Six pieces of paper
    • A pencil
    • A ruler
    • A cutting blade (scissors or a knife)
    1. fold each piece of paper in half, then in half again. you should now have 4 squares.on one of the squares, make a small mark in the center.
    2. now, take the other 3 squares and fold them in half diagonally. the point of the triangle should touch the mark you made in the center of the square.
    3. use the blade to cut along the fold lines, making sure to cut through all the layers of paper.
    4. you should now have 6 triangular pieces of paper.
    5. to assemble the tetrahedron, take 2 of the triangles and place them base-to-base. the point of one triangle should be pointing up, and the point of the other triangle should be pointing down.
    6. now, take the third triangle and place it over the top of the 2 triangles you just placed together. the point of the triangle should be pointing straight up.
    7. press down on the top triangle to secure it in place.
    8. your tetrahedron is now assembled!
