In the previous segment, we learned about the uses of convex mirrors. In this segment, introduction to lenses, we will learn about lenses and their types.
What is Lens?
A lens is a piece of transparent material (usually glass) that has two opposite regular surfaces either both curved or one curved and the other plane and that is used either singly or combined in an optical instrument for forming an image by focusing rays of light.
Lenses are used in different optical instruments like a magnifying glass, telescope, microscope, etc. They are used because of their ability to magnify the image of the objects under observation when the objects are placed within a certain range from the lens.

Lenses are basically divided into two types, compound lens and simple lens. A compound lens is nothing but a combination of two or more simple lenses.
