What is a Rainbow?
A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky. It takes the form of a multicoloured arc. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the section of sky directly opposite the sun.
Rainbow Colors
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet; these are the colors making up a rainbow. Each color has its own wavelength. When raindrops fall from the sky, they act like prisms, bending the sunlight and separating the light into its different colors.
Rainbows on Titan
!
This is a photo of Saturn’s moon Titan, taken by the Cassini spacecraft. It shows a strange and beautiful phenomenon: rainbows in Titan’s atmosphere!
Titan is the only place in the solar system other than Earth where we know that rain falls from the sky. And like Earth, Titan also has rainbows! But on Titan, the raindrops are much, much bigger than on Earth.
The raindrops on Titan are so big that they can actually reflect sunlight back to space, creating the beautiful colors that we see in this photo.
