Solution: Let the speed of steamer in still water is x km/hr

Now, speed of streamer in downstream = (x + 3) km/hr

$S o, distance = (x + 3) \times 8$

$= 8 x + 24 k m / h r$

Speed of streamer in upstream = (x – 3) km/hr

$S o, distance = (x - 3) \times 16$ $= (16 x - 48) k m / h r$

$S p e e d o f b o a t \Rightarrow 8 x + 24 = 16 x - 48$

$8 x = 72$

$x = 9 k m / h r$

$∴ Distance = (8 x + 24) k m / h r$

$= (8 \times 9 + 24)$

$= (72 + 24) = 96$
