    Mendel upon observing the recombinant phenotypes in F2 generation of dihybrid cross proposed the law of independent assortment which states that behaviour of a pair of traits is independent to the behaviour of another pair/s of traits. i.e. The behaviour of a pair of traits yellow/green color of pea seeds is independent to the behaviour of another pair of traits such as round/wrinkled seeds of pea. Hence in F2 generation, there is possibility of formation of new phenotypes neither seen in P generation nor in F1 generation such as Green round and Yellow wrinkled seeded plants.
