When ${Cl}_{2}$ or ${Br}_{2}$ reacts with carboxylic acid in the presence of red phosphorus, then $α$ -hydrogen of carboxylic acid is replaced by ${Cl}_{2}$ or ${Br}_{2}$ .

$\underset{Acetic acid}{{CH}_{3} COOH} \overset{{Br}_{2}}{\to} \underset{α -Bromoaceticacid}{{CH}_{2} BrCOOH}$ . This reaction is known as Hell Volhard Zelinsky reaction.
