    During the Mughal empire, Mansabdars got their salaries in the form of Jagirs. Mansabdar held a mansab, i.e., a rank or position. They did not necessarily have to stay in the jagir or personally look after its administration. They only had rights to the revenue generated from the jagirs. During Akbar’s reign, the jagirs were scrutinised so that the mansabdar was paid his expected salary. Thus the peasantry suffered huge losses during Aurangzeb’s reign when he could not assess the jagir.
