    Solution:

Kovalan was the name of the merchant in the story of Silappadikaram.
The first Tamil epic is also known as Silappathikaram or Silappatikaram. It is a 5,730-line poem that uses almost exclusively akaval (aciriyam) meters. The epic tells the tragic love story of Kannaki and Kovalan, a typical married couple. A thriving coastal city of the early Chola monarchy serves as the setting for The Silappatikaram. A newlywed pair in love and enjoying wedded bliss is Kannaki and Kovalan. Kovalan eventually encounters courtesan Matavi (Madhavi). He develops feelings for her, leaves Kannaki, and relocates to Matava. He generously spends money on her. Despite her husband's adultery, Kannaki waits as the chaste woman despite her heartbreak. A singing contest is held during the rain deity Indra's festival.
