In 1881, India conducted its first synchronous census. Census 2011 is the fifteenth in this continuous series dating back to 1872. Indian population census organisation is regarded as the world's largest administrative network. The Indian census attempts to collect information on various socioeconomic characteristics of the entire population to maximise the utility of the data. Following that, the government conducted a regular census every ten years. The final census before independence was conducted in 1941.
