Introduction
In this poem, a school boy speaks. He is an unhappy child. His childhood is crushed in the name of learning and teaching.
Happy Morning
The boy likes the morning. He is pleased to see the trees and the birds. The distant sound of the huntsman’s horn is pleasant. He wants to sing with the skylark. In brief the nature seems to offer a sweet company.
Unhappy Morning
However, his morning hours pass unhap¬pily. He lives a worrisome life in the school. Neither the books nor the teacher’s lecture interest him.
Childhood
The pleasure of childhood is in being free and happy like a bird. But a child is put in the school just as a bird is put in the cage. So the child is as unhappy as a caged bird.
The Parents
The parents should understand their fault. Depriving the child of joy and freedom means depriving the world of its spring. It is like nipping the buds and flowers from the plants. The world is a sorrowful place without happy childhood.
The Summer of Joy
In the absence of a happy childhood, we shall have winter of sorrow. The summer (heat) of joy will never be there.

भूमिका
इस कविता में एक स्कूली बच्चा बोल रहा है। वह एक दुःखी बालक है। उसका बचपन पढ़ने और पढ़ाने के नाम पर कुचल दिया गया है।
शुभ प्रभात
बच्चा प्रात:काल देखकर प्रसन्न होता है। पेड़ और पक्षी उसे खुश कर देते हैं। दूर से आती हुई शिकारी के हार्न की आवाज आनंददायी लगती है। वह स्काईलार्क के साथ गाना चाहता है। संक्षेप में प्रकृति उसे एक प्रिय साथी की तरह प्रतीत होती है।
दुःखी प्रभात
पर उसका प्रात:काल दुःख में बीतता है। वह स्कूल में चिंता से ग्रस्त जीवन बिताता है। न ही पुस्तकें और ने अध्यापक का भाषण उसे रुचिकर लगते हैं।
बचपन
बचपन का आनंद इसमें है कि पक्षी की तरह आजाद और खुश रहा जाए। पर बच्चे को उसी तरह स्कूल में डाल दिया जाता है जैसे किसी पक्षी को पिंजरे में डाल देते हैं। अत: बच्चा वैसा ही दु:खी होता है जैसे पिंजरे में बंद पक्षी।
माता-पिता
माता-पिता को अपनी गलती समझनी चाहिए। बच्चे को आनंद और आजादी से वंचित रखना संसार को उसके बसन्त से विहीन कर देना है। यह ऐसा ही है जैसे किसी पौधे से उसकी कलियाँ और पुष्पे तोड़ लिए जाएँ। खुशहाल बचपन के बिना संसार दु:ख से भरा है।।
आनंद की ग्रीष्म
सुख भरे बचपन की अनुपस्थिति में हमारे साथ दु:ख की शीत ऋतु ही रहेगी। आनंद की गर्मी वहाँ कभी न आ पाएगी।
