Statue of the Happy Prince
There stood the statue of the Happy Prince on a tall column in the city. He was gilded all over. He had thin leaves of fine gold. He had two bright sapphires for eyes. A large ruby glowed on his sword hilt.
A little swallow sits on the statue
A little swallow came and sat on the statue. He decided to spend the night on it. But as he was going to sleep, a large drop of water fell on him. The swallow was amazed. There was no cloud, yet it rained. The second drop of water made the swallow decide to fly off. The third drop of water made him to look at the statue. It was weeping.
The statue speaks out
The statue spoke to the swallow. It said that when it was alive it had not known what tears were. His courtiers called him a Happy Prince. Now he sat very high. He saw the miseries of the city.
The swallow is sent to help a woman
The Happy Prince told the swallow that there lived a woman far away. She was a seam¬stress. She was embroidering flowers on the satin gown of the Queen’s maid of honour. The maid was to wear it at the next Court ball. In the bed, there lay ill her little boy. He was suffering from fever. The Happy Prince asked the swallow to pick the ruby from his sword hilt. He should give that to the woman.
The swallow helps the woman
First the swallow said that his friends had gone to Egypt. He was waited for in Egypt. But the happy Prince requested him to stay one night. The swallow agreed. He picked up the ruby and flew to the woman’s house. He put the ruby near the woman’s thimble. He also fanned the boy’s forehead. The boy felt a bit better. He sank into a deep slumber.
The swallow is asked again to help a play-wright
The swallow flew back to the Happy Prince. He felt warmer though it was cold. The Happy Prince told him that it was because he had done a good act. The swallow wanted to fly to Egypt. But the Happy Prince told him to stay there one more night. He told the swallow that he saw a playwright in a little room. He was trying to finish a play for the Director of the Theatre. But he was too cold to write. He was hungry also. He asked the swallow to pluck one sapphire from his eye and give that to the playwright.
The swallow returns to the Happy Prince
The playwright saw the sapphire. He was happy. Now he hoped to finish the play. The swallow went to the Happy Prince. He told him that he had come to bid him goodbye. But the Happy Prince asked him to stay one more night.
The swallon is sent to help the matchgirl
The Happy Prince told the swallow that there was a little matchgirl in the square below. All her matches had fallen in the gutter. Her father would beat her if she didn’t bring home some money. She was crying. He asked the swallow to pluck out the sapphire from his other eye and give that to her. The swallow flew with the sapphire. He put the sapphire into the little girl’s hand.
The swallow decides to live with the Happy Prince
The swallow flew back to the Happy Prince. He told the Prince that he would stay with him as he had gone blind. The Happy Prince asked him to fly over the city and tell him what he saw. He also told the swallow that the most marvellous thing was human suffering. And human misery was the greatest mystery.
The swallow reports what he sees
The swallow flew over the city. He saw hungry children. He also saw many poor people. The Happy Prince asked him to take leaf after leaf of the fine gold over his body and give to them. The poor now laughed and the children played.
Winter sets in
Then there came the snow and then frost. Everything looked white. The poor little swallow grew colder and colder. But he didn’t leave the Happy Prince. However, he could no longer keep himself alive. He at last knew that he was going to die. The swallow asked the Prince to let him kiss his hand. The Prince told him that he was happy he was going to Egypt. So he told him to kiss him on the lips. But the swallow told him that he was not going to Egypt. He was going to the house of Death. And he fell down dead.
The statue breaks and is melted
At that moment there appeared a crack in-side the statue. The heart of the Happy Prince broke into two. The dead swallow lay at its feet. The next morning the Mayor and the Town Councillors came that way. They looked at the statue. They declared that the Happy Prince was no longer beautiful. So he was no longer useful. Then they melted the statue in a furnace. But the broken heart didn’t melt. It was thrown away.
God asks for two most precious things
God asked one of His Angels to bring Him the two most precious things in the city. The Angel brought Him the leaden heart of the Happy Prince and the dead bird. God told that in the garden of Paradise the little bird would sing forever. The Happy Prince would praise Him forever in His city of gold.

हैप्पी प्रिंस का बुत
शहर में एक ऊँचे स्तम्भ पर हैप्पी प्रिंस का बुत खड़ा था। उस समूचे (बुत) के ऊपर मुलम्मा चढ़ा हुआ था। उसके ऊपर बढ़िया सोने के पतले-पतले पत्ते थे। आँखों के स्थान पर दो चमकीले नीलम लगे हुए थे। उसकी तलवार की मूठ पर एक बड़ी मणि चमक रही थी।
बुत पर एक अबाबील ( छोटा चिड़ा) आ बैठता है।
एक छोटा अबाबील आया और बुत पर बैठ गया। उसने रात इस पर बिताने का निर्णय किया। परन्तु जैसे ही वह सोने जा रहा था उस पर पानी की एक मोटी बूंद गिर गई। अबाबील आश्चर्यचकित हो गया। कोई बादल भी नहीं था, फिर भी वर्षा हो गई। पानी की दूसरी बँद के कारण अबाबील ने उड़ने का निर्णय किया। पानी की तीसरी बूंद ने उसे बुत की तरफ देखने के लिए बाध्य कर दिया। वह रो रहा था।
बुत बोलता हैं।
बुत ने अबाबील से बातचीत की। उसने कहा कि जब वह जीवित था तो उसने नहीं जाना था कि आँसू क्या होते हैं। उसके राजदरबारी उसे हैप्पी प्रिंस (खुश राजकुमार) कहते थे। अब वह बहुत ऊँचे पर बैठता है। वह शहर के कष्टों को देखता है।
अबाबील को एक महिला की सहायतार्थ भेजा जाता है।
हैप्पी प्रिंस ने अबाबील को बताया कि दूर एक महिला रहती है। वह दर्जिन है। वह रानी की दासियों में सबसे सुन्दर दासी के साटिन के गाउन पर फूलों की कढ़ाई कर रही थी। दासी ने इसे अगले दरबारी नृत्य में पहनना था। बिस्तर पर उसका छोटा लडेको बीमार पड़ा हुआ था। वह बुखार से पीड़ित था। हैप्पी प्रिंस ने अबाबील को उसकी तलवार की मूठ से मणि निकालने के लिए कहा। उसे महिला को देना चाहिए।
अबाबील महिला की सहायता करता है।
पहले तो अबाबील ने कहा कि उसके मित्र मिस्र में जा चुके हैं। वे मिस्र में उसका इन्तजार कर रहे हैं। परन्तु हैप्पी प्रिंस ने उसे एक रात रुकने के लिए कहा। अबाबील मान गया। उसने मणि को निकाला और महिला के घर उड़ गया। उसने मणि को महिला के अंगुस्ताने के पास रख दिया। उसने लड़के के माथे पर हवा भी की। लड़के को थोड़ा आराम लगा। वह गहरी नींद में सो गया।
फिर अबाबील को एक नाटककार की सहायतार्थ कहा जाता है।
अबाबील हैप्पी प्रिंस के पास वापस उड़ कर आया। उसे गर्मी का एहसास हुआ यद्यपि ठण्ड थी। हैप्पी प्रिंस ने उसे बताया कि यह ऐसा इसलिए है कि उसने कोई अच्छा कार्य किया है। अबाबील मिस्र उड़ जाना चाहता था। परन्तु हैप्पी प्रिंस ने उसे वहाँ एक और रात ठहरने के लिए कहा। उसने अबाबील को बताया कि वह एक नाटककार को एक छोटे कमरे में देख रहा है। वह रंगशाला के निदेशक के लिए एक नाटक को समाप्त करने की कोशिश कर रहा था। परन्तु उसे इतनी ठण्ड लग रही थी कि वह लिख नहीं सकता था। उसे भूख भी लगी थी। उसने अबाबील को कहा कि वह उसकी आँखों से एक नीलम निकाल ले और उसे नाटककार को दे दे।
अबाबील हैप्पी प्रिंस के पास उड़कर आता है।
नाटककार ने नीलम को देखा। वह खुश हो गया। अब उसे नाटक को समाप्त करने की आशा थी। अबाबील हैप्पी प्रिंस के पास गया। उसने उसे बताया कि वह उसे अलविदा कहने आया है। परन्तु हैप्पी प्रिंस ने उसे एक और रात रुकने के लिए कहा।
अबाबील को माचिस बनानेवाली लड़की की सहायतार्थं भेजा जाता है।
हैप्पी प्रिंस ने अबाबील को बताया कि नीचे स्क्वेअर में माचिस वाली एक छोटी लड़की है। उसकी सारी माचिसे नाली में गिर गयी हैं। यदि वह घर में कोई पैसा नहीं लायी तो उसका पिता उसकी पिटाई करेगा। वह रो रही है। उसने अबाबील को उसकी दूसरी आँख की मणि उतारने और उसे लड़की को देने के लिए कहा। अबाबील मणि के साथ उड़ गया। उसने मणि को छोटी लड़की के हाथों में रख दिया।
अबाबील हैप्पी प्रिंस के साथ रहने का निर्णय करता है।
अबाबील हैप्पी प्रिंस के पास उड़कर चला गया। उसने प्रिंस को बताया कि वह उसके पास रहेगा क्योंकि अब वह अन्धा हो गया है। हैप्पी प्रिंस ने उसे शहर पर उड़ने के लिए और क्या देखा उसे बताने के लिए कहा। उसने अबाबील को यह भी बताया कि सबसे अद्भुत वस्तु मानव कष्ट होता है। और मानव कष्ट सबसे बड़ा रहस्य है।
अबाबील जो कुछ देखता हैं बताता हैं
अबाबील शहर के ऊपर उड़ा। उसने भूखे बच्चे देखे। उसने काफी गरीब व्यक्ति भी देखे। हैप्पी प्रिंस ने उसे उसके शरीर से सोने के पतले-पतले पत्तों को उतारकर उनको देने के लिए कहा। गरीब अब हँसने लगे और बच्चे खेलने लगे।
शीत ऋतु का आगमन
तभी बर्फ गिरने लगी और फिर पाला। हरेक वस्तु सफेद दिखाई देती थी। छोटा बेचारा अबाबील ठण्डा होता गया। परन्तु उसने हैप्पी प्रिंस को नहीं छोड़ा। फिर भी वह और अधिक जीवित नहीं रह सकता था। अन्त में वह जान गया कि उसकी मृत्यु समीप है। अबाबील ने प्रिंस को कहा कि वह उसे उसका हाथ चूमने की अनुमति दे दे। प्रिंस ने बताया कि उसे खुशी है कि वह मिस्र जा रहा है। इसलिए उसने उसे उसके होंट चूमने के लिए कहा। परन्तु अबाबील ने उसे बताया कि वह मित्र नहीं जा रहा है। वह मृत्यु के घर जा रहा है। और वह मृत होकर गिर पड़ा।
बुत टूट जाता है और उसे पिघला दिया जाता है।
उस समय बुत के अन्दर एक दरार आ गयी। हैप्पी प्रिंस का दिल दो हिस्सों में टूट गया। मृत अबाबील उसके पैरों में गिरा पड़ा था। अगली सुबह महापौर और नगर पार्षद उधर आए। उन्होंने बुरा की तरफ देखा। उन्होंने घोषणा की कि अब हैप्पी प्रिंस सुन्दर नहीं।दिख रहा। इसीलिए वह अब लाभकारी नहीं है। तब उन्होंने बुत को भट्टी में पिघला दिया। परन्तु टूटा दिल नहीं पिघला। इसे बाहर फेंक दिया गया।
परमात्मा का सबसे मूल्यवान दो वस्तुओं के लिए कहना
परमात्मा ने अपने देवताओं में से एक देवता को शहर से दो अत्यधिक मूल्यवान वस्तु लाने के लिए कहा। देवता हैप्पी प्रिंस का सीसे वाला दिल और मृत पक्षी उनके पास ले आया। परमात्मा ने कहा कि छोटा पक्षी स्वर्ग के उद्यान में हमेशा गाएगा। हैप्पी प्रिंस अपने सोने के शहर में सदा उसकी प्रशंसा करेगा।
