      Chapter 5 The Hundred Dresses–I

      1. How is Wanda seen as different by the other girls? How do they treat her?

      A. Wanda is seen as different by the other girls. She is poor and lonely girl. The girls made fun of her poverty and teased her by commenting on her dress.

      2. How does Wanda feel about the dresses game? Why does she say that she has a hundred dresses?

      A. Wanda did not show any feelings regarding the dresses game. It is most likely that she was deeply hurt. It could have been one of the reasons why her family left the place and moved to the city.

She was a girl who was very poor and came from a long distance which made her feet dirty. She wanted to draw attention of her friends. So, she felt very happy whenever she told her friend that she had hundred dresses without realizing that they were making fun of her.

      3. Why does Maddie stand by and not do anything? How is she different from Peggy? (Was Peggy’s friendship important to Maddie? Why? Which lines in the text tell you this?)

      A. Maddie always stood by and never did anything as she was afraid that if she did, she would be the next target of the girls. She was poor herself though she wasn’t as poor as Wanda She usually wore somebody’s hand-me-down clothes. When Peggy asked Wanda questions in a mocking voice, Maddie felt embarrassed. Maddie wished Peggy would stop teasing Wanda but she never had the courage to tell Peggy as she teared herself to be the new target for the school. Maggie was in somewhat awe of Peggy. Peggy was the most liked girl in the classroom and she drew better than anyone else.

      (i) Peggy, who had thought up this game, and Maddie, her inseparable friend, were always the last to leave.

(ii) She was Peggy’s best friend, and Peggy was the best-liked girl in the whole room.

(iii) Peggy could not possibly do anything that was really wrong, she thought.

(iv) Oh, Maddie was sure Peggy would win.

      4. What does Miss Mason think of Wanda’s drawings? What do the children think of them? How do you know?

      A. Miss Mason appreciated the paintings of Wanda. She was impressed at the creativity of the girl because she had painted hundred paintings which were in wide range of variety.

The children also admired the drawings. Everybody stopped and whistled or murmured admiringly. After Miss Mason had announced that Wanda was the winner, they burst into applause, and even the boys were glad to have a chance to stamp on the floor and whistle. Also, just as Peggy and Maddie entered the room, they stopped short and gasped. Later they recognized the designs as those which Wanda had described to them. And in the end, Peggy exclaimed, “…and I thought I could draw.” This shows that she also realized how good Wanda’s drawings were.

NCERT Solutions for Class 10 English the Hundred Dresses 1 is divided into three sections:

      • Check Your Oral Comprehension
      • Concerning the Text
      • Considering the Language

Under ‘Oral Comprehension Check,’ questions from The Hundred Dresses 1 Class 10 NCERT Solutions are covered.

Question 1: You’ll learn the following facts about Wanda Petronski from the first question.

      • Most benches had a corner seat reserved for her.
      • Rough boys frequently took up all of the seats around her.
      • She was poor, timid, and insecure, so she preferred to isolate herself rather than socialize with the other students.

Question 2: The second question describes Boggins Heights, the neighbourhood where Wanda used to live. The area was undeveloped and mudslide-infested. Boggins Heights, which was mostly populated by poor people, lacked adequately maintained roadways and resembled a slum.

Question 3: In the third question, Peggy and Maddie planned to tease Wanda beyond school hours, but they discovered she was missing. The remainder of the students were completely unconcerned.

Question 4: As you can see from the fourth question, “having fun with her” clearly refers to poking fun of Wanda’s defects and imperfect appearance. Wanda used to be teased by her students for her insecurities and her dozens of clothes.

Question 5: This question clarifies how Wanda Petronski differed from the other students in the class:

      • Her parents immigrated to America from Poland to start a family.
      • Other students made fun of her because her name was unusual and difficult to pronounce.
      • She pretended to have a hundred gowns since she was self-conscious about wearing the same dress every day.

Question 6: This question elucidates Wanda’s lack of a hundred garments. She lied, claiming she had a hundred gowns and sixty pairs of shoes after being teased for wearing the same dress and unclean shoes every day.

Question 7 and 8: We learn why Maddie was embarrassed by Peggy’s questions to Wanda and why she didn’t stop her from asking them in the next two questions. She felt awful for Wanda since she, too, was impoverished and knew how she felt.

For the following reasons, Maddie did not intervene in Peggy’s mockery of Wanda:

      • Peggy was well-liked at school.
      • Maddie was terrified that if she asked Peggy to stop, she would be ridiculed.

Question 9: Maddie believed Peggy would win the drawing competition since she was talented at drawing and liked by the majority of the students at school.

Question 10: After answering the tenth and last question, we learn that Wanda won the drawing competition out of all the girls. She’d drawn sketches of each of the hundred gowns she claimed to own. Her classmates applauded her for her outstanding artwork.

The section ‘Thinking About the Text’ in NCERT Solutions Class 10 English Hundred Dresses 1 has questions. The majority of the questions in this area, such as Wanda’s experience in class and how she was abused by Peggy, are answered in the preceding section.

However, we learn from the fourth question that Miss Mason was quite impressed by Wanda’s drawing and thought it was lovely. Wanda, she believed, deserved to be recognized separately for her efforts. Her students clapped and applauded her as well.

‘Thinking about the language’ is the topic of the next few questions in NCERT Solutions Class 10 English First Flight Ch 5. These are objective questions that demand you to pay close attention to the text’s varied words, sentences, and other elements.
