Verb. The verb is a word that expresses some action, feeling or existence. It tells us something about the subject; as<br \/>\nLions roar. (action)<br \/>\nBoys fly kites. (action)<br \/>\nI feel sorry. (feeling)<br \/>\nAshoka was a great king. (existence)<\/p>\n<p>2. All the verbs (shown above in black) \u2018roar\u2019, \u2018fly\u2019, \u2018feel\u2019, and \u2018was\u2019, are limited by ^ the number and person of their subjects. Therefore, \u2018roar\u2019, \u2018fly\u2019, \u2018feel\u2019, and \u2018was\u2019, are Main Verbs\u2014main verbs are also called Finite Verbs.<\/p>\n<p>3. Verbs are divided in two parts :<br \/>\nA. Main Verbs (also called lexical verbs)<br \/>\nB. Helping Verbs (Auxiliaries\u2014Primary and Modals)<br \/>\nAll verbs in English except the 24 helping verbs are main verbs. I read<br \/>\nThey read. She goes.<br \/>\nI go.<br \/>\nThey go.<br \/>\n<strong>Non-finite<\/strong> verbs do not change their forms according to the number, person or tense of the subject. The infinitives, gerunds and participles are called non-finites.<\/p>\n<p>4. Read the following sentences :<br \/>\nLata sang a song.<br \/>\nI wrote a letter.<br \/>\nChildren like sweets.<br \/>\nIn each of these sentences the verb takes an object \u2018song\u2019, \u2018letter\u2019 and \u2018sweets\u2019 are objects. A verb that takes an object is called a Transitive Verb. The object usually answers the question what ? Or whom ?<br \/>\nNow look at the following sentences :<br \/>\nBirds fly.<br \/>\nThe sun shines.<br \/>\nThese verbs do not require objects. They express the actions by themselves and make the sense complete. They are called Intransitive Verbs.
