Verb.<\/strong> The verb is a word that expresses some action, feeling or exist-ence. It tells us something about the subject; as<br \/>\nLions roar. (action)<br \/>\nBoys fly kites. (action)<br \/>\nI feel sorry. (feeling)<br \/>\nAshoka was a great king. (existence)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. All the verbs<\/strong> (shown above in black) \u2018roar\u2019, \u2018fly\u2019, \u2018feel\u2019, and \u2018was\u2019, are limited by the number and person of their subjects. Therefore, \u2018roar\u2019, \u2018fly\u2019, \u2018feel\u2019, and \u2018was\u2019, are Main Verbs\u2014main verbs are also called Finite Verbs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Verbs are divided in two parts :<\/strong><br \/>\nA. Main Verbs (also called lexical verbs)<br \/>\nB. Helping Verbs (Auxiliaries-Primary and Modals)<br \/>\nAll verbs in English except the 24 helping verbs are main verbs. Main Verbs<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Main Verbs are also of two kinds :<\/strong><br \/>\n(a) Finite verbs<br \/>\n(b) Non-finite verbs<br \/>\nFinite verbs change their forms according to the person and number of the subject and the tense also, e.g.<br \/>\nHe reads. I read<br \/>\nThey read. She goes<br \/>\nI go.<br \/>\nThey go.<br \/>\nNon-finite verbs do not change their forms according to the number, person or tense of the subject. The iitflnitives, gerunds and participles are called non-Jinites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Read the following sentences :<\/strong><br \/>\nLata sang a song.<br \/>\nI wrote a letter.<br \/>\nChildren like sweets.<br \/>\nIn each of these sentences the verb takes an object. \u2018Song\u2019, \u2018letter\u2019 and \u2018sweets\u2019 are objects. A verb that takes an object is called a Transitive Verb. The object usually answers the question what ? Or whom ?<br \/>\nNow look at the following sentences :<br \/>\nBirds fly.<br \/>\nThe sun shines.<br \/>\nThese verbs do not require objects. They express the actions by them\u00acselves and make the sense complete. They are called Intransitive Verbs. Present Participle<br \/>\nIf the Past or Past Participle is formed from the Present Tense by chang\u00acing the Vowel of a Verb ; as\u2014<br \/>\nTake, took, taken and do, did, done<br \/>\nThe Verb is said to be a Strong Verb. .<br \/>\nIf the Verb requires the addition of \u2018ed\u2019, \u2018d or T to form their Past and Past Participles, they are called Weak Verbs ; as\u2014<br \/>\nFinish,
