There are two different ways in which we can report the words of a speaker :<br \/>\n(a) Direct Speech or Direct Narration.<br \/>\n(b) Indirect Speech or Indirect Narration.<\/p>\n<p>2. (a) Direct Speech contains the actual words of the speaker ; as\u2014<br \/>\nSarla said, \u201cMy father has a roaring business in Mumbai\u201d<br \/>\nHe said to me, \u201cI am feeling unwell today.\u201d<br \/>\nIn these sentences, actual words of the speaker are given within inverted commas without any change.<br \/>\n(b) Indirect Speech gives the substance of the speaker\u2019s actual words and not the exact words spoken by him or her ; as\u2014<br \/>\nSarla said that her father had a roaring business in Mumbai He told me that he was feeling unwell that day.<\/p>\n<p>3. The actual words of the speaker, given within \u2018 inverted commas\u2019 are called the Reported Speech. In the same way, the Verb which introduces the Reported Speech is called the Reporting Verb.<br \/>\nIn the sentence above \u2018said\u2019 is the Reporting Verb and \u2018My father has a roaring business in Mumbai\u2019 is the Reported Speech.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting Verb and Reported Speech. Look at the following sentences :<br \/>\nRadha says, \u201cI shall\u2019 finish my home-work today.\u201d<br \/>\nSushma said to Pushpa, \u201cShow me your dolls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The verbs \u2018says and said\u2019 in the above sentences are \u2018Reporting Verbs\u2019.<br \/>\nThe exact words of the speaker given within the inverted commas are \u2018Reported Speech\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>4. Here are some distinctive points regarding the Direct Speech and Indirect Speech :<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the Direct Speech<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Reported Speech is put within Reported (Inverted) Commas.<\/li>\n<li>The Reported Speech and the Reporting Verb are separated by a Comma.<\/li>\n<li>The first word of the Reported Speech begins with a capital letter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Transformation of Direct Speech into Indirect Speech<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I. Rules for the Change of Tense<\/strong><\/p>\n<table border=\"2\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Rule I.<\/strong> If the Reporting Verb is in the Present or Future Tense, the Tense of the Verb in the Reported Speech does not change.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Examples<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Direct: Rajesh says, \u201cShe has brought fame to her family.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: Rajesh says that she has brought fame to her family.<br \/>\n2. Direct: Rohit has said, \u201cI cannot displease my friend.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: Rohit has said that he cannot displease his friend.<br \/>\n3. Direct: I shall say, \u201cI went to Agra on Monday.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: I shall say that I went to Agra on Monday.<br \/>\n4. Direct: She will say, \u201cI have sent him a present.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect:She will say that she has sent him a present.<\/p>\n<table border=\"2\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Rule II.<\/strong> if the Reporting Verb is in the Past Tense, the tense of the verb in the Reported Speech must be changed into the corresponding Past Tense.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Examples<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Direct: I said, \u201cI am speaking the truth.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: I said that I was speaking the truth.<br \/>\n2. Direct: The teacher said, \u201cBoys fail because they do not study regularly.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: The teacher said that boys Jailed because they did not study regularly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exception to Rule II<\/strong><br \/>\n(i) If there is a Universal Truth or Habitualfact in the Reported Speech, the Tense of the verb is never changed ; as\u2014<br \/>\n1. Direct : He said, \u201cFace is the index of mind.\u201d (Proverbial truth)<br \/>\nIndirect: He said that face is the index of mind.<br \/>\n2. Direct: The teacher said, \u201cThe earth rotates round its axis.\u201d (Geographical truth)<br \/>\nIndirect: The teacher said that the earth rotates round its axis.<br \/>\n3. Direct: Horatius said, \u201cDeath comes sooner or later.\u201d (Universal truth)<br \/>\nIndirect : Horatius said that death comes sooner or later.<\/p>\n<p>(ii) The Tense of the Verb in the Reported Speech does not change if the reported speech states a past historical fact; as\u2014<br \/>\n1. Direct : He said, \u201cIndia became free on 15th August, 1947.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect : He said that India became free on 15th August, 1947.<br \/>\n2. Direct : She said, \u201cHer father lived at Lahore for ten years.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect : She said that her father lived at Lahore for ten years.<\/p>\n<p>(iii) If two such actions are given in the Reported Speech which take place at the same time, the Past Indefinite or Continuous Tense does not change.<br \/>\nDirect: He said, \u201cMohan was singing a song while Gopal was playing on a flute.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: He said that Mohan was singing a song while Gopal was playing on a flute.<br \/>\n<strong>Examples<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Direct: She said, \u201cI am a top-class singer.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: She said that she was a top-class singer.<br \/>\n2. Direct: We said, \u201cHe is writing a poem.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: We said that, he was writing a poem.<br \/>\n3. Direct: He said, \u201cIt may rain tonight.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: He said that it might rain that night.<br \/>\n4. Direct: He said, \u201cA devil ever remains a devil.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: He said that a devil ever remains a devil.<\/p>\n<p>The future tense of the reported speech Is changed as under :<br \/>\nFuture Indefinite\u2014would \/ should<br \/>\nFuture Continuous\u2014would\/should be<br \/>\nFuture Perfect\u2014would\/should have<br \/>\nFuture Perfect Continuous\u2014would\/should have been<br \/>\n<strong>Examples<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Direct: You said, \u201cHe is a very good athlete.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: You said that he was a very good athlete.<br \/>\n2. Direct: I said, \u201cI have finished my work.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: I said that I had finished my work.<br \/>\n3. Direct: He said, \u201cHer parents will pay a visit to Delhi.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: He said that her parents would pay a visit to Delhi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>B. Interrogative Sentences<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Conversion Of Interrogative Sentences<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>A<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>From Direct Into Indirect<\/strong><\/p>\n<table border=\"2\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Rules :<\/strong><br \/>\n1. The Reporting Verb is changed, into \u2018ask. enquire, inquire or demand\u2019<br \/>\n2. No conjunction is used to introduce the Reported Speech if the question begins with (an interrogative) word ; such as\u2014what, who, whose, which, when, where, why, how. whom etc.<br \/>\n3. If or whether is used to introduce the Reported Speech if the reported speech has no question word.<br \/>\n4. Change the questions into statements. Put Jail stop in place of mark of interrogation (?).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Examples<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>(a) Questions beginning with a Helping Verb<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Direct: He said to her, \u201cShall I accompany you to Agra ?\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: He asked her if he would (should) accompany her to Agra.<br \/>\n2. Direct: She said to him, \u201cHad I been absenting myself from school for a month ?\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: She asked him if she had been absenting herself from school for a month.<br \/>\n3. Direct: He said to us, \u201cHas she been spinning since yesterday ?\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: He asked us if she had been spinning since the previous day.<br \/>\n4. Direct: They said to you, \u201cShall we be going on picnic tomorrow ?\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: They asked you if they would be going on picnic the next day.<br \/>\n5. Direct: I said to her, \u201cWill you have ironed your clothes ?\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: I asked her if she would have ironed her clothes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(b) Sentences having \u2018Yes\u2019 or \u2018No\u2019<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Direct: \u201cAre there any more files ?\u201d He asked. \u201cYes, sir,\u201d said the peon.<br \/>\nIndirect: He asked the peon if there were any more files. The peon replied respectfully in affirmative.<br \/>\n2. Direct: The teacher said to Lila, \u201cDid you break the window pane ?\u201d \u201cNo, sir,\u201d said Lila, \u201cI did not.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: The teacher asked Lila if she had broken the window pane. Lila replied respectfully and refused it (to have done it).<br \/>\n3. Direct: \u201cIf you find my answers satisfactory, will you give me five rupees ?\u201d said the astrologer. \u201cNo, \u2019 replied the customer.<br \/>\nIndirect: The astrologer asked the customer whether he would give him five rupees if he found his answers satisfactory. The customer replied in negative.<br \/>\n4. Direct: I said to him, \u201cDo you want to go to Chandigarh ?\u201d He said, \u201cNo, sir.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: I asked him if he wanted to go to Chandigarh and respectfully he replied in negative.<br \/>\n5. Direct: He said to me, \u201cDoes Mohan still play ?\u201d I. said, \u201cYes, sir.\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: He asked me if Mohan still played and I replied in positive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(c) Questions beginning with Interrogative Words<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Direct: He said to me, \u201cWhom does she want to contact ?\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: He asked me whom she wanted to contact.<br \/>\n2. Direct: They said to her, \u201cWhose house are you purchasing ?\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: They asked her whose house she was purchasing.<br \/>\n3. Direct: You said to him \u201cWhy are you making mischief ?\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: You asked him why he was making mischief.<br \/>\n4. Direct: They said to us, \u201cHow have you solved this sum ?\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: They asked us how we had solved that sum.<br \/>\n5. Direct : We said to them, \u201cWho has misguided you ?\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: We asked them who had misguided them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(d) Questions beginning with modal auxiliaries<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Direct: I said to him, \u201cMay Sunita come in to discuss with you something ?\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: I asked him if Sunita might come in to discuss with him something.<br \/>\n2. Direct: The traveller said to me, \u201cCan you tell me the way to the nearest inn ?<br \/>\nIndirect: The traveller asked me if I could tell him the way to the nearest inn.<br \/>\n3. Direct: He said to me, \u201cMust I leave for Mumbai tomorrow ?\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: He asked me if he had to leave for Mumbai the next day.<br \/>\n4. Direct: I said to her, \u201cCould you give me your notes ?\u201d<br \/>\nIndirect: I asked her if she could give me her notes.<br \/>\n5.
