For example, a plant that lives in a hot, dry climate will have adaptations that help it to survive in those conditions, such as deep roots that reach down to find water, leaves that lose water quickly, and a waxy coating that prevents water loss.<\/p>\n<p>Animals also have adaptations that help them to survive in their habitats. For example, a polar bear has fur that is white to blend in with the snow, and a thick layer of fat under its skin that helps to keep it warm. A lion has sharp claws and teeth that are good for hunting prey, and a keen sense of smell that helps it to find food.<\/p>\n<p>Plants and animals can also adapt to new habitats. For example, a plant that lives in a wet environment might grow tall to reach the sunlight, or develop a strong root system to hold it in place. For example, some organisms have adaptations that allow them to survive in very hot or very cold environments. Plants that grow in the shade tend to have smaller leaves with a less surface area.<\/p>\n<p>Another way plants adapt to their environment is by changing the color of their leaves. Plants that grow in a sunny environment tend to have green leaves, while plants that grow in the shade tend to have leaves with a lot of red and purple color.<\/p>\n<p>Some plants adapt to their environment by changing the amount of water they lose.
